HISTORY OF ROW HOUSES

The Akaretler Row Houses were built by Sarkis Balyan, in 1875 by the order of Sultan Abdülaziz as an annex to Dolmabahçe Palace. It can be called as the first example of public housing in the Ottoman Empire. Since the original construction, buildings faced lots of modifications. The district had long been abandoned and was facing the challenges of many declining urban areas until 1987. A renovation project was started in 1987 by a company but not completed. Bilgili Holding took over the property in 2005. The Akaretler opened its doors in 2008, following a thorough regeneration process. Since 2005, it continues to serve to several functions.
